Community Cohesion

Community cohesion is about how people get along together. But behind that simple concept is a very complex subject matter, for which there is no one solution.

There are many parts to building community cohesion, from tackling inequalities to developing people's understanding and tolerance of others. The Council has worked with One Nottingham to develop a City-wide strategy to improve Community Cohesion, which will identify ways in which we can help build community cohesion across the city. Community cohesion is important. If people are unable to get on, tension and intolerance starts to emerge, which can then lead to fragmented neighbourhoods and increases in anti-social behaviour.

The four main aims of the Community Cohesion Strategy are:

  • To reduce inequalities, discrimination and levels of deprivation
  • To increase community engagement, sense of belonging and pride
  • To increase and promote interaction between people
  • To increase safety and respect for individuals and communities
