SOVA Mentoring Scheme Launch

On Friday 8th January, One Nottingham was invited to the launch of the new Early Intervention Mentoring Service, one of sixteen projects aimed at breaking negative intergenerational cycles in Nottingham. This service is run by Supporting Others through Volunteer Action (SOVA), a specialist organisation that provides mentoring and support to socially excluded people.

Mentoring to young people aged 8 to 12 years from across Nottingham is delivered by SOVA trained volunteers from the community. Mentoring will offer these young people a chance to raise their aspirations at a time when they may be experiencing difficulties and be at risk of being involved in anti-social behaviour or offending. This mentoring can be offered either face-to-face, where a young person is matched with a mentor who they meet on a weekly basis, or through a pioneering e-mentoring service, where a young person can communicate through a secure email system.

The project also delivers benefits to the community through offering volunteering opportunities. Volunteers get the chance to gain an accredited qualification through the Open College Network whilst building on their own skills and experience to improve the life of young vulnerable people.

The launch event began with a brief introduction from Stephen McClaren, the Project Manager, and then guest speakers Graham Allen, Nottingham North MP, and Gary Kernagan, Director of Development and Operations, SOVA. The event followed on with a series of workshops, which were run in conjunction with Urban Angel, a local arts company. A text alert system was demonstrated to delegates showing how an e-mentoring relationship might develop with a young person.
